A little About Build-Guard

At Build-Guard, we don’t just understand the homebuilding process — we’ve lived it from every angle.

My journey began in law enforcement, first as a police officer and then a detective, where attention to detail and protecting the public were more than just duties — they were a way of life. That same integrity and investigative mindset transitioned into a successful real estate career, where helping people navigate deals and avoid pitfalls became second nature.


But the true crucible came in the world of homebuilding. As the owner of a premier residential construction company, he built more than 100 custom homes and managed hundreds of contractors, subcontractors, and staff. The business rose to the top of the industry, known for its craftsmanship, efficiency, and trusted relationships — a model of how to do it right.


Then came the next chapter: a strategic acquisition agreement intended to transition leadership and continue the legacy. But instead of growth, the new management brought alleged misconduct, mismanagement, and ultimately, alleged theft — dragging the once-thriving company into the 11th chapter. The good, the great, the better… all undone by the careless and the corrupt.


And that’s why Build-Guard exists.


We’ve seen what works. We’ve seen what fails. We’ve lived the victories — and we’ve survived the collapse. I can’t tell you how many times, as the owner of a truly custom home building company, I sat across from someone who had already built a home — and they’d say the same thing: “Never again.”

They'd share nightmare stories — delays, budget blowouts, poor workmanship, disappearing contractors. I listened with a heavy heart, always thinking, we’re different. And we were. We truly set out to do it better. To be the builder people actually enjoyed working with. We grew fast. We took on more. We pushed to be the best in every way.


But here's the raw truth: somewhere along the way, we — and when I say we, I mean I — made mistakes.


In our pursuit of excellence, a few of those dream builds turned into stressful, disappointing experiences. Not because we didn’t care. True Story Alert - When the Closing Table Turns Cringe: Why Experience Matters More Than a Title.

Not long ago—though it feels like yesterday—I witnessed a moment that’s etched in my mind for all the wrong reasons. It was supposed to be a celebration. A dream fulfilled. Closing day.


For this client, it wasn’t just a house. It was her “Willow.” She had named it that. Each selection, every finish, every little detail—she had poured her heart into it. It was a masterpiece in her eyes, and ours too.


As a gesture, we prepared a slide show of the finished home, showcasing her hard work and vision coming to life. The mood in the room was pure joy, smiles all around. Then, in walks the real estate agent—our real estate agent. The one earning a $25,000+ commission check for… well, we’re still trying to figure that part out.


The client beamed with pride, watching the images of her “Willow” on the screen. She turned to the agent, eyes sparkling, and asked with genuine excitement:


“Do you like my home?”


His response?


“That’s not your home.”


Silence. A collective what-the-hell hung in the air.


He was dead serious. And dead wrong.


Six months of decisions, emails, walk-throughs, and construction—all lost on the very person who was supposed to represent her interests. It was embarrassing. For him. For us. For the whole moment.


And that’s the point of this story.


Look, there are some great agents out there. I’m even a licensed agent myself. But let me be clear: titles don’t equal expertise and the role of an agent is NOT, what Build-Guard is or does.    


Are agents bad to have involved?  Absolutely not!  Are they good at their role?  For the most part, Yes.  BUT, When it comes to the actual scope of custom home building, you need someone who’s lived it, breathed it, and made every mistake in the book so you don’t have to.
